The Gentle Path at The Meadows program is designed to quick-start the recovery process, teach valuable life skills and uncover the underlying causes that often contribute to the patient’s addiction.
Patients participate in individual therapy sessions with CSAT-trained clinicians throughout their stay. These sessions may focus on:
- Personal trauma
- Psychological assessment results
- Diagnostic impressions
- Crisis resolution
- Discussion of sensitive issues
- Discharge planning
Additionally, every patient will have an individual consultation with Dr. Patrick Carnes, weekly sessions with our psychiatric provider and trauma resolution therapists, and individual appointments with our staff psychologist, medical provider, and primary and family therapists as needed.
Group therapy is one of the most effective tools employed at Gentle Path at The Meadows. Upon admission, patients are assigned to a group led by a primary counselor. Using the power of the group, each group member benefits immensely through open, honest discussion.
Group therapy allow patients to:
- Learn they are not alone through conveying their problems, struggles and feelings with fellow group members
- Have open discussions to help identify and dissolve defense mechanisms
Weekly Psychiatric Counseling
Sexual addiction treatment can be a traumatic and emotionally exhausting experience. Because of this, Gentle Path at the Meadows includes regular psychiatric counseling as part of the treatment plan for all patients.
Patients will spend one-on-one time with their psychiatrist, in a mixture of counseling sessions and medication management.
- Appointments are scheduled a minimum of once a week
- Additional appointments are available if needed at no additional charge to the patients
- Psychiatrists will attend group therapy with patients as needed
Experiential Trauma Work
Using the pioneering work of Senior Fellow Pia Mellody, patients in our Survivor's Workshop examine their childhood in a safe and nurturing environment. Patients learn to release painful emotions and heal themselves from the shame, neglect or abandonment they have experienced in the past.
Experiential therapy helps patients recognize negative emotions that trigger compulsive behaviors. Our therapies are used to help resolve emotional and mental roadblocks in order to allow patients to understand how suppressing these feelings can be destructive to their long-term well-being. An expansive array of experiential modalities include:
- Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR)
- Equine-assisted psychotherapy
- Expressive arts therapy
- Somatic Experiencing
Experiential therapies offer patients many benefits, including a greater understanding of their authentic selves, along with promoting greater self-confidence and independence. By addressing maladaptive behaviors, patients are able to develop positive communication skills.
