Sexual Addiction: Diagnostic Challenges and New Research

Sex and pornography addiction have become common presenting problems for today's clinician. Dr. Carnes will discuss the current state of the field of sex and pornography addiction, including the most up-to-date research and information on diagnosis, etiology, and treatment. The systemic impact on the family will also be briefly addressed, including the traumatic impact of sex addiction on partners and treating the family using a relational paradigm.

After this presentation, attendees will be able to:

  1. Discuss new research on the etiology and diagnosis of sex addiction.
  2. Discuss the most up-to-date research on sexual conditioning, neuroscience, and sexual dysfunction.

10:45 a.m. - 12:15 p.m.
The Trauma Time Line
by Tian Dayton, Ph.D., MA, TEP

The Trauma Time Line was developed to give clients an opportunity to place their “traumas” within the context of their lives. Because the thinking mind is not making here and now sense of circumstances that are experienced as traumatic, people can be left with a splintered and disorganized sense of parts of their own life experience. They cannot connect the dots, they lose track of the “when” and “where” and the “how much/how little” side of experiences, and they are left with fragmented sense impressions and emotional memories that have no storyline. This contributes to the constant reliving of unprocessed pain. The traumatized person can never really leave their unprocessed experience behind because much of it is still relegated to a less than conscious state; it has not been elevated, through language, to the conscious mind where it can be thought about, understood, and placed into context. An experiential and relational process bypasses the conscious, often resistant or defended, part of the mind and allows clients an easier entry into their own memory bank. The Trauma Time Line offers a visual picture and an experiential process that allows clients to place their pain into the context of their lives and to recognize how it has affected them over time.

Learning Objectives
After this presentation, attendees will be able to:

  1. Identify and observe how a client's reenactment dynamics were set up and lived out over time.
  2. Identify where a client's development may have been arrested or gone off track.
  3. Identify the developmental progression of a client's trauma through a visual context.

1:30 - 4:30 p.m.
Spirituality, Archetypes, and Trauma
by Peter Levine, Ph.D.

The treatment of trauma is fraught with many pitfalls and “tight corners.” Generally overlooked, however, is an innate relationship between trauma, archetypes, and spirituality. Understanding and applying these intimate relationships can suggest therapeutic strategies that help to support and resource trauma clients and support the genuine transformation of traumatic experience. In this presentation, we will look at some simple ways to help clients open to, and even embrace, their spontaneous bodily reactions, facilitating not only movement out of traumatic states, but access to spiritual dimensions that support the “deep self.”

Learning Objectives
After this presentation, attendees will be able to:

  1. Identify the extrinsic relationship between trauma and spiritual experiences.
  2. Describe how to access these non-ordinary experiences in dealing with the residue of deep trauma.
  3. Describe how to access portals to the deep-self through the spiritual components of trauma.
