Life-Changing Workshops

For Healing, Discovery, and Emotional Growth

At Gentle Path at The Meadows, our Family Program is designed to assist patients and their families in becoming more aware of the dynamics operating within their family systems. Patients and their families share their thoughts and feelings with each other in a nonjudgmental fashion. We encourage patients to look at their patterns in dealing with life’s challenges as they relate to relationships. The family program offers an opportunity to better understand how addictions and other disorders impact the people in our lives. Family members are supported in making a decision to transform unhealthy patterns into healthy ones in order to create a stronger and more functional family unit.

The Family Role In Recovery

Families are essential to the recovery process. Our experience shows that when family members work together in support of each another, dysfunctional cycles can be broken and intergenerational patterns can be altered. There is an opportunity to learn ways to engage in both greater relational skills and better self-care. Our goal is to help rebuild crucial support systems for patients. Families can help with this process by:

  • Being Present – listening and offering support
  • Treating their loved ones as whole human beings
  • Accepting mental health issues
  • Believing they can recover
  • Building on their strengths

Family Week

During our week-long Family Program, Gentle Path at The Meadows will provide approximately 30 hours of interactive psychoeducation and activities specifically designed to address the issues faced by family members and significant others of sex addicts.

The primary purpose of our Family Program is to increase the family’s understanding of sex addiction, addiction in general, and any other mental health issues that your patient might be experiencing. We also seek to provide support to family members and introduce them to a lifestyle of recovery based on the principles of the 12-step program. Family members and patients work with clinicians in group sessions to learn about the disease process and explore the dynamics going on in their families. During the process, family members are given an opportunity to examine their own family-of-origin issues, learn about functional and dysfunctional family patterns, and begin to address barriers to recovery and communication.

Family Week consists of a thorough series of psychoeducational lectures on topics specifically relevant to families impacted by sex addiction. Families also participate in Equine Assisted Therapy and Ropes Challenge course during Family Week. In addition, patients are asked to hold themselves accountable to their family members for the impact of their addictive behaviors and family members have an opportunity to share the thoughts and feelings they have experienced while living with their patient. Each family participates in mutual boundary-setting exercises to set limits and improve future interactions and communication. Each family is the focus of an experiential exercise aimed at specifically addressing issues present in their family system. Finally, patients and their family members participate in a discharge planning session to discuss progress in treatment and aftercare options.

Our team is also strongly committed to the emotional health and healing of spouses, partners, and families impacted by the consequences of sexually addictive behaviors. We understand sexual acting out behaviors often result in hurt, betrayal and a breakdown in trust between patients and their family members.

To assist our patients' loved ones in dealing with these feelings, Gentle Path at The Meadows offers an intensive one-week Family Care Program. During this week, we encourage family members and patients to identify the problems they are facing and set goals for recovery. By working together as a family, we believe that recovery can continue for a lifetime. While family involvement can play a vital role in your patient’s recovery, a major focus of the Family Program is to help family members and loved ones begin their own healing process from the damage caused by addictive behaviors.
